Conference on Esperanto Studies

About the Conference

The Conference on Esperanto Studies has stood out since 1978 as the most important forum where researchers, students and curious members of the general public can discuss and explore together all phenomena related to Esperanto studies, interlinguistics, international communication and linguistic (mis)understanding. Initiated by Detlev Blanke, these conferences take place within the framework of the Universal Congresses of Esperanto, and their programme includes lectures, poster presentations and round tables. The main aims of the Conference on Esperanto Studies are to create a collaborative space and stimulate original approaches to the topics addressed. Each year the conference has a core theme, but talks on related topics are also welcome. Using Esperanto as a working language, these conferences also serve as a training ground for Esperanto speakers and a source of ideas, articles and reports for the Esperanto-speaking community.

Call for papers for the 48th Conference on Esperanto Studies

The organisers invite all researchers and congress participants to take part in CED’s 48th Conference on Esperanto Studies. The Conference will take place on 6 August 2026, within the framework of the 111th World Congress of Esperanto in Graz, Austria (1 to 8 August 2026).

The programme will include several twenty-minute presentations with time for questions and discussion. At the end of the day, we will hold a round table on current research directions and challenges in Esperanto studies relating to the topics addressed. Being hosted in the country of one of the most extensive library collections on interlinguistics at the Austrian National Library in Vienna – with the Esperanto Museum – we wish, among other topics, to focus particularly on the work of libraries and archives for the scholarly study of Esperanto and planned languages. We have already invited specialist speakers on these topics and welcome further proposals.

From the proposals received we will select those we invite to present at the Conference. Based on the presentations, we will encourage some of the speakers to write up their texts for publication and submit them for peer review with a view to publication in the journal Esperantologio / Esperanto Studies.

We invite all scholars – particularly young researchers and first-time participants – to send proposals for presentations. Proposals, containing between 150 and 200 words, should be sent to ek48@interlingvistiko.net. The deadline for proposals is 30 April 2026.
